From box to self-custody in four steps
Set aside fifteen minutes. Work through the four steps in order and your crypto ends up in your own hands, with no exchange and no custodian holding a key.
Install Ledger Wallet™
Install the app on your computer or phone. It is the only software you need.
Initialize your device
Plug it in, choose to set it up as new, and pick a PIN of four to eight digits. The PIN locks the hardware, not your crypto.
Write down your recovery phrase
The device shows 24 words once, and only once. Copy them onto the sheet in the box, by hand, and store it offline.
Move your crypto across
Create an account in the app, then send a small test amount to the address it shows before sending the rest.

The 24 words your device shows you once are the only route back into the wallet. Lose the device and that phrase restores everything onto a replacement — which is exactly why nobody else should ever see it.
